1st 4 Lessons only £49! >> Driving Fears | Every driver has a fear when driving. Some drivers will be scared of crashing, others of driving too fast and being caught by a speed camera, But what about punctures? When it comes to driving fears, most are linked to a cars tyre and so when a poll was arranged by mytyres.co.uk for 1000 motorists, it was no surprise to find that 55% of these were most scared of losing control of their vehicle due to skidding on a wet road. Breaking down was the second biggest fear while only 3% were worried about a puncture. One way to avoid these problems is to listen to Campaigners for road safety who recommend that drivers do not leave their tyres wear down to the 1.6mm minimum but instead should consider changing them at 3mm.
Return to top >> Police are full of it! Police forces have been criticised for accumulating thousands of pounds worth of repair bills, to be paid ot of taxpayers' money, after repeatedly filling their tanks with the wrong fuel.
They claim to have spent thousands on new shiny stickers to help them see the fuel type, however, still they cause damage by using the wrong fuel.

Return to top >> Backlash over speed limit cut plan Plans to cut speed limits on A-roads from 60mph to 50mph have caused a public outcry.
The news has sparked a heated debate on the prime minister's official website. More than 30,000 people have now signed a petition urging the minister to reconsider. It is thought it will make no difference to road deaths and the cut in carbon-emissions will be insignificant.
Although the government claim it will save 200-250 lives a year, some believe it is just a crude attempt to catch drivers unawares.

Return to top >> Road Crashes Bigger teen Killer than Swine Flu In a recent study showing main causes of death for youths, suicide and violence were beaten to the top spot by road crashes.
Car accidents are responsible for 10% of deaths of all young people today, making it a major concern. During 2008, 635 young people died in a car 256 of those were the drivers.

Return to top >> RED driving school attracts Facebook critisism "When is a driving school, not a driving school?"
Much critisism has been levelled at Red Driving School in recent months over their high-prominant television advertising campaign recruiting driving instructors to their banner. Owned by the same company that runs The Instructor College, many people feel that too much emphasis is made on recruiting instructors on the promise of work that is unlikely to be available. Interestingly, over 90% of Red's£18.5M profit last year was from training and recruitment, whilst less than 5% came from it's proper driving cshool activities.
You can log on to Facebook and check out the Anti Red Driving School group threads to get the full flavour and extent of the backlash.

Return to top >> Passengers Ignore Drink-Drive Risks One third of adults have got in a car while suspecting the owner to be above the drink-drive limit whilst more than half of Britons would support making it an offence to knowingly get into a car with a drunk driver, a new survey suggests!
Some 9% of those polled said they had travelled with a drunk driver and a further fifth thought they might have. Of those, almost half said it was the only way to get home, 34% had not considered the consequences and 38% said they had a short distance to go. Zurich Insurance's poll was based on a sample of 1,011 adult drivers.
Some 71% of those questioned agreed Britons should not be able to consume any alcohol at all before driving and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) said it welcomed any moves to reduce drink driving, but questioned how easy it would be to police such a law.

Return to top >> Where are Britain's Angriest Drivers? Scotland's drivers are the least stressed and least likely to shout at other drivers, however they are most likely to become involved in a physical altercation according to the Environmental Transportation Association (ETA).
The research found that the most stressed drivers in Britain are those in the Midlands and Wales, but more Londoners have had their car deliberately rammed into than anyone else. Although levels of driver stress differed around the country, motorists from every region were found in need of 'green driving techniques' to help them stay calm. Only one in ten drivers felt embarrassed about their behaviour behind the wheel.
The ETA has found that aggressive driving not only adds to road danger, but lowers fuel efficiency. It is issuing the following simple advice during Green Transport Week (13-21 June 2009):
>p>1. Avoid harsh acceleration and braking to save fuel, reduces wear and tear and feel more relaxed.
2. Look as far as possible up the road to reduce stop/start driving, reduce fuel consumption and make you a safer driver.
But what causes our British anger? On television, Gordon Ramsay is allowed to let fly at the saddest of hopeless restaurateurs, calling them all kinds of horrible names; Big Brother thrives on confrontation and all the soaps feature people having a go at each other. So it's small wonder that so many of us end up thinking that this is how we should lead our lives.
When we see John Prescott, (then the deputy prime minister, no less), actually punching someone in the face on television - and getting away with it - it's not surprising that most reasonably peace-loving folk find themselves tut-tutting like old colonels wondering what the world is coming to.

Return to top >> Police Speeding Record Figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show cameras caught 47,228 public service vehicles speeding last year, 18,000 more than 2007. Out of these only 354 were fined.
Public service vehicles are only allowed to speed through the cameras with lights and sirens. Managers have the discretion to cancel tickets if they believe there was a good reason for speeding, such as pursuing a suspect or trying to find a witness. The disparity between the figures raises the suspicion that thousands of officers are being let off even if they do not have a valid excuse for speeding.
Critics point out motorists enjoy no such rights and that if they want to challenge a fixed penalty notice they must go to court.

Return to top >> Motorists Blind to Signs According to Direct Line and the road safety charity Brake, a number of drivers do not know the meaning of common road signs. Two thirds could not identify a zebra crossing and half didn't know about the "No motor vehicles" warning sign. One in six didn't recognise the "National speed limit" sign when they saw one, suggesting they are not monitoring their speed, whilst only 12% of the motorist shown the signs knew the meaning of all 8. Maybe signs should be written in Braille?
The poll found older motorists, aged 35 or more, who had not faced a theory paper fared better than those who had passed the multiple choice exam. As a matter of interest, the top-five least recognised signs were: cycle route ahead, uneven road, hump bridge, steep hill downwards and national speed limit.

Return to top >> Blind? Take a Braille driving test! The DVLA have spent thousands of pounds translating its documents into Braille, even though blind people are barred from driving. A spokesman said it is part of the overall translation program. This must surely be a farcical waste of money, time and effort?
The translation costs for the blind are part of a £120,000 a-year translation bill run up by the Swansea-based agency. Part of the driving test requires people to show they can read a car number plate from a distance and even the theory test includes a hazard perception test, which would surely be redundant for someone with severe visual impairment?

The DSA say this change will be made to ensure the examiners' time is focused on where it is needed most. Some may feel that the needs of the consumer are yet again taking a "back-seat".

Return to top >> Change in the way examiners give directions on tests From October 2010 there will be a trial of a new style of driving test in order to assess the competency of the learner. The examiner will act as a passenger and will ask the pupil to take him to a destination via certain roads and then will leave the rest to the pupil.
It is hoped this style of test will encourage the learner to make full use of the road signs and information, if the pupil can read the road whilst under pressure then after passing it is hoped they will have a good understanding of the road.

Return to top >> Supervising drivers to attend test failure debrief A proposal has been made that will require an ADI or unqualified supervising driver to sit in on all car practical tests and the test debrief from October next year. There were also other proposals made which included:
· Every pupil taking a pre-driver course and receiving a qualification. After completion of this qualification there will also be the introduction of a partial credit for the theory test..
· New case studies into the theory test for car drivers and moped and motorcycle riders to better assess whether learners have understood driving or riding theory.
· From October 2010 the DSA will be testing out the new 3-Dimensional version of the hazard perception test. This is all part of a scheme to encourage safer driving.

Return to top >> UK Government proposes change in speed limits The road safety strategy for 2020 ('A safer way') will see a 20mph speed limit in built up areas and a 50mph limit on rural roads. This means we will need to be even more aware of our speeds on the road.
A few facts were released by Parliament also showing that when driving at 43.5mph you are 2.5 times more likely to die in a crash than at 37.3mph and 6 times more likely at 49.7mph
(Source: www.parliament.vic.gov.au/rsc/demerit/demerit.htm)
Remember there are over 1,000 deaths and 40,000 injuries every year in the UK so watch your speed and be careful. A Pass Plus course could help drivers to become better aware of the road and its different conditions.

Return to top >> Cops can now catch you in the dark Camera Cops are now being supplied with night vision goggles which help them to see in pitch black conditions. This is part of a scheme to catch speeding drivers.
There are also more developments in devices used to capture speeding cars for instance the use of infra-red technology is being introduced into a device by camera maker 'Truvelo'. It is said to be able to identify a car number plate from up to 100 meters at night and also measure the speed from 1,800m, including a digital video recorder. It can also capture and track the drivers movements.
Cops have not stopped there. A German company is developing air traffic control radar devices which can pick up cars from 300 meters away. You are now more likely to get caught for speeding, even in the dark, so watch your speed!

The system uses the in-built GPS system in a mobile phone to detect the speed of which it is travelling. If it moves faster than 10mph its messaging capability will be immediately shut down. The driver will not then be able to use the phone until they have stopped. How's that for technology!

Return to top >> Mobiles still being used 5 years after law changed! The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) would like to remind motorists AND employers about the risks of making a call or texting at the wheel of a car. Five years after the law changed in December 2003, banning the use of a mobile phone whilst driving OR permitting another person to do so, there have been 25 fatal, 64 serious and 259 slight accidents involving the use of a mobile phone. (Source: RoSPA.)
Whether hand-held or hands-free you are four times more likely to crash when your concentration is distracted on the phone. Police now have the ability to check your telephone records when gathering evidence and so our advice is to switch off your phone when getting behind the wheel and let the voicemail do its job! Otherwise you may get a £60 fine along with 3 points on your licence.

Return to top >> Driving Instructor Services based on A2Z concepts Following completion of conceptual and design formalities, many of the services available to the A2Z of Motoring instructors who work in south Wales can now be enjoyed by sole-traders and small independant driving schools.
Since early 2008, a selection of support services have been made available to driver trainers working under their own brand throughout the UK. Subscribers to the new service can make use of an Online office, Call centre support in the subscribers own name, Web site design and hosting, Handheld technology to enable data input and provide receipts and an Accounting and reporting package. All these facilities are mutually supportive of each other and enable (for example) new pupils to book lessons online directly from a list of available lesson spaces generated from the instructor's Online office.

Return to top >> Palm technology available to all driving schools Following interest from many quarters about the Palm technology used by A2Z of Motoring, the proprietors have decided to launch a new facility in 2007 supporting "own brand" one-man-band instructors and multi-car operators throughout the UK.
The new service will enable any instructor working for themselves or a driving school operating under their own trade name to enjoy the huge benefits associated with the data capture, storage and useage currently available only to A2Z of Motoring.
As well as a licence to use the handheld Palm PDA software, the new service will include a central call handling facility (where instructors calls will be diverted from their own number to that of a professional call centre that will hold all data about the instructors pupils and appointments), a web design and hosting service (including the capability for pupils to book and amend their driving lessons directly on the instructor's own web site) and an Internet office (where instructors will be able to operate their business from and check what transactions have been made during the day on their behalf by the call centre).
Also included in the package will be a full record keeping service including daily transaction logs, statistical data and accounting reports. Interested parties are invited to contact A2Z of Motoring in the first instance to register their potential interest. Roll-out is anticipated in February/March 2007.

Return to top >> Another year over ..... On Saturday 18th December 2006 the Annual General Meeting of A2Z of Motoring driving instructors was held at Swansea. After a lively discussion, during which prices, products and procedures were reviewed, awards were then presented to the instructors who had contributed most to the development of the business during the year.
Instructors Mike Dumelow, Iwan Williams and Rhian Knuska were each awarded a "top of category" award with the Instructor of the year award going to Steve Botwood of Cardiff. A very special award was presented to newcomer Carly Goss whose contribution really stood out and merited particular mention by management.
Photos show: (1) The presigious Instructor of the Year award (2) Franchisee Derek Oldfield accepting the Instructor of the Year award on behalf of Steve Botwood, and (3) Carly Goss being given her special award by A2Z of Motoring assistant manager, Alex Zapettis.

Return to top >> A2Z again successful in ORDIT renewal Saturday 9th September 2006 saw yet another successful biannual inspection for the A2Z of Motoring's continued registration on the Official Register of Driving Instructor Trainers ("ORDIT").
Three of A2Z's most senior driving instructor trainers proved their ongoing ability to prepare potential driving instructors to sit the driving instructor examinations and congratulations are due to managing partner Nick Zapettis, general manager Kevin Williams and senior instructor Mike Dumelow for extending their personal certification for yet another 2 years.
Although each of them have been grade 6 ADIs for some time, ORDIT reregistration is never a foregone conclusion and all three are more than happy to prove yet again that they continue to meet the required standard set by the industry to "train the trainers".
Even the fact that the driving school is currently operating from temporary offices pending relocation next year did not prejudice the "premises inspection" section of the assessment, nor did the changes in operating practices recently implimented by the driving school diminish the exemplary standard that the ORDIT inspectorate have come to expect of the UK's most innovative and quality-conscious school of motoring.
And for one of the trainers, Nick Zapettis, it was very nearly a "clean sweep", with a maximum 6 marks being awarded in 14 out of 15 of the category headings that were applicable. Having slipped one point to 5 only in the final "debriefing" category right at the end of the assessment, Nick's considered response was: "Perfection can never truly be achieved, it can only be alluded to."
But then he's always been a bit full of himself!
